OpenPEC is an Open Source project bornt to realize a "Posta Elettronica Certificata" system complying to the guide lines defined by the "Centro
Nazionale per l'Informatica nella Pubblica Amministrazione" (CNIPA).
Its developement is done in a collaborative way, using Sourceforge.net infrastructures, promoting in this way Sourceforge realization, use and diffusion.
OpenPEC is not an email system developed completely from scratch but it is thought like as an extention for the most popular Open Source mail servers in the market; from this point of view, you may consider it like a "plug-in" for these systems.
According to the specifical ways connected to the implementation of each server, OpenPEC can also be "added" to an already installed and working system: in this way a natural evolution of existing systems is granted, avoiding difficult, often expensive, operations of migration or conversion. This is for sure a very important characteristic for anybody needing to adopt a PEC system for documents exchange.
OpenPEC has been developed using Perl language and it has been projected to be modular, so that extensions and adaptations are easy. From an implementation point of view, it is based on a "branch" of the Open Source project AMaVIS, which extends the most widespread mail servers with antivirus functionality for emails.
