The "Posta Elettronica Certificata" (PEC) is an email system where the sender receives electroning documentation, with legal value, proofing the sending and the delivery of electronic documents.
PEC has been created with the objective to switch to digital the concept of letter sent by recorded delivery with acknowledgement of receipt. The means of transportation choosen is the email, that grants, besides the user-friendliness and the capillary diffusion over the territory, a speed not even comparable to the traditional mail.
The PEC system functioning can be described by the following scheme:
In detail:
- the sender (PEC mailbox owner) sends a message to another certified user
- the message is picked up by the certified domain provider that wraps it into a transport envelope and signs it, in order to grant the impossibility to forge it. The it addresses the message to the recipient PEC provider
- the recipient PEC provider checks the signature and ships the transport message to the addressee.
- once delivered the message, the recipient PEC provider sends an acknoledgement of receipt to the sender, so he/her can be sure that the message reached its destination.
Everything is regulated by the exchange of receipts and notifications both between PEC servers and final users and between several PEC servers.
The final user uses the PEC mailbox like a common mailbox and he/her is free to use both an email client program or the webmail.
